30 Days of Books: Day 2 – Least favourite book

Darcy and Elizabeth dance in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice
Hello, I’m a judgey asshole. Let’s get married.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Ok, so about 5/6 of the drivel I have been forced to read at school can fall into this category.  And there is a lot of drivel being published these days.   I try to steer clear of the drivel, although sometimes it comes in an interesting- looking package.  However, one book that I have been unable to enjoy despite repeated attempts is Pride and Prejudice.

I can hear the angry outcries now: “It’s so romantic!” “Mr. Darcy is the best!”  “How DARE you not like Austen?”  To which I reply: This book is boring.  An absolute snore.  Worse than Emma, even.  I am in the midst of Northanger Abbey and enjoying it greatly. I dislike Darcy and find Lizzy annoying.  Yes, annoying.

I have seen the recent movie with Keira Knightly, which was well done, and the BBC miniseries is wonderful, but compared to some of Austen’s other works, Pride and Prejudice is downright dull.  It lacks the wit and parody of the rest of her novels. Despite the classic story that has been adapted numerous times, this is my least favorite book.
