30 Days of Books: Day 8 – An unpopular book you believe should be a bestseller

Read: War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy
Stars: Five

Drinking: Hazelnut Coffee

I am blaming some of my long absence from this blog on a bad bout of stomach flu.  Today, “day 8,” I bring you War and Peace, long regarded as a long, boring epic that is a reading milestone.  I assure you, the book may be long, but it is fascinating!  I read it twice my senior year of high school and have been addicted to Tolstoy and Russian novels since.

War and Peace follows the tales of several interconnected Russian aristocratic families through the Napoleonic wars and beyond. It is a beautifully, written, detailed historical novel that explores reactions to war and gently mocks the Russian aristocracy of the day.  The battles are so detailed that one can re-create them (possibly in costumes while reading the book aloud…) (or with Lego people…).  It’s easy to get caught up in Tolstoy’s sweeping epic and imagine yourself to be attending a ball with Natasha or confused on the front lines with Pierre.

Speaking of Pierre – I have a bit of a crush on him.  He’s just so confused & bumbling – I want to give him a hug and tell him that happy endings exist.

Overall, this is a fantastic book that I highly recommend! var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push([‘_setAccount’, ‘UA-26693790-1’]); _gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’]); (function() { var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true; ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’; var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })();
