Won’t Read: Stephanie Meyer
Drinking: Constant Comment Green Tea, Bigelow
Stephanie Meyer is the author of the mind-bogglingly popular Twilight series and a few other novels that I can’t be bothered to Google. I avoid her work at all costs for a number of reasons, good taste being the primary motivation.
The more I heard about Twilight, the less inclined I was to read it. Then I read this series of recaps of the books on LiveJournal and all desire to attempt to read them was gone. I did get the e-book of Twilight from the library and attempted to read it, so I could properly judge it, but I got bored on the first page. Based on Meyer’s writing “style” from Twilight, I refuse to read any of her other novels.
Quality aside, the plot of Twilight and it’s sequels disturbs me. A whiny, self-absorbed teenager (aren’t we all) gets into a weird co-dependent relationship with an older man…who essentially stalks her. Then when he decides to leave her, she mopes around. Then they get married as soon as she’s legal and have a child. It’s Mary-Sue mixed with poor role models.
For excellent teenage female protagonists, read The Hunger Games. For a good paranormal romance with vampires and a strong female lead, read the Sookie Stackhouse series. Avoid Stephanie Meyer’s poor writing and wimpy characters in favor of good writing!
